Question about your database
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:45:27 pm »
Is there any chance you guys might release your ip database as a standalone package? It would be of greater service to the web community and make it easier on your servers since sites won't have to query your db all the time. I can even see myself paying a small amount for some type of update releases too. Thoughts?

I don't believe so, but Mike (BS owner) will be able to clarify.

Well, it's possible, but I don't know how practical this would be for us to do. If it would help pay some percentage of the cost of running the servers then it'd be more likely that we'd offer something like this. In your opinion, what would be a reasonable cost to charge for the initial IP database and the monthly updates?

Personally I think the initial db should be free and a subscription service should exist for updates. Keep in mind there are other bot/proxy databases that are available for free.

In that case why aren't you using one of them, and why would you want to pay for updates to ours?

I would probably have paid $50/year for a subscription to this service.  That is why I have made a couple of donations.  You have almost completely solve my BB spam problem.

We appreciate your donations very much- they help a lot.

We're hesitant to charge people for anything unless it's absolutely necessary; we'd like the service to remain free if at all possible, and if people want to donate (as you've done), then they can....we just don't want a few dollars to be a barrier to the usefulness of the service.

Depending on how fast things grow, we may be forced to charge for the service someday, but not yet (and hopefully never).
